Last-minute grooming is being made to miniature landscapes with tiny buildings and bustling railroad stations as the San Bernardino County Museum gets ready for Train Days, April 2 through 10. Model train layouts from a dozen clubs and organizations will fill the museum galleries, its Learning Depot, and even its courtyard starting this weekend and continuing Tuesday through Sunday, April 10.
Members of San Bernardino North Rotary held their March meeting at the museum especially to help wash the museums own Southern Pacific locomotive and Santa Fe caboose, both currently under restoration. Among the participants were two veterans of World War II, Marvin Billings, a 93-year-old member of the Army Air Forces, and 89-year-old Chuck Obershaw, U.S. Army Glider Infantry Regiment. Both veterans served in the Pacific theater at the end of war.
Train Days kicks off Saturday, April 2 with a Museum Association Members pancake breakfast sponsored by Redlands Noon Kiwanis along with a chance for community members to join together and break the world record for longest Soul Train dance. Dancers of all ages will enjoy 50 percent off regular museum admission between 9 and 11 a.m. The dance line will start to form at 10 a.m. and dancing with DJ Eturnal will kick off at 11 a.m. for an hour of locomotion.
Train Days and the County Museums other exciting events and exhibits reflect the effort by the Board of Supervisors to achieve the Countywide Vision by celebrating arts, culture, and education in the county, creating quality of life for residents and visitors.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at 2024 Orange Tree Lane, at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Train Days is included with museum admission. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.
