Museum exhibit connects with National Mental Health Month

“Get Connected: Make the Connection through Art” is the theme for this year’s Mental Health Month exhibit at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. Museum visitors will see works created by artists that participate in programs provided by the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health and by Patton State Hospital, located in Highland. The exhibit is included with paid museum admission.

“Art has the power to connect individuals in a powerful way,” said Michele Nielsen, the museum’s curator of history. “By showing their work in this exhibit, artists are reaching out through their art to connect with their community and with museum visitors. Each person’s frame of reference and life experience is uniquely their own, but what we express through the art we make can connect us with others in a universal way.”

“In the rush to live life, we often forget the importance of being in connection with our emotions and our artistic abilities,” said Nielsen. “This exhibit is not only a wonderful celebration of art, but a reminder to make a little art of your own, each day.”

Visitors can do just that as a part of the exhibit. Using art-making supplies available in the exhibit in the Schuiling Gallery, visitors can pause and create something that represents a connection between themselves, their friends and family, or their community.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 am to 5pm. General admission is $8 (adult), $6 (military or senior), $5 (student), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sb countymuseum.org. The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. If assistive listening devices or other auxiliary aids are needed in order to participate in museum exhibits or programs, requests should be made through Museum Visitor Services at least three business days prior to your visit.
