Free Sunday Admission
12/2/2007 - Free Sunday Admission
The San Bernardino County Museum will be open to public free of charge on Sunday, December 2, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free admission is sponsored by San Bernardino County 3rd District.
In addition to exhibits of cultural and natural history relating to inland Southern California and the southwest, visitors can enjoy special exhibits: "Duck Stamp Art" in the Fisk Gallery, and "Textile Traditions" in the Hall of History.
At 2 p.m, Curator of Geology J. Chris Sagebiel will present a lecture, "The Tree of Life," an overview of an exhibit currently planned for the new Hall of Geological Wonders. "The classification of organisms has changed drastically over our lifetime," said Sagebiel. "Reptiles are no longer a scientific classification. Birds are dinosaurs. We ourselves are viewed as highly specialized fish. Elephants are more closely related to tiny elephant shrews than to almost any other living thing. What has caused scientists to see things in this new light? What do we do with this information?"
In his lecture, Sagebiel will demonstrate how both our perspectives and knowledge of evolutionary history has changed in recent years by discussing the methods that lead to the construction of the Tree of Life and current research that is shaping how we view our natural world. He will also explore the tree of life to reveal some of the surprises that we have uncovered through molecular biology and paleontology.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays and holiday Mondays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Everyone is admitted free on Sunday, December 2. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcounty.gov.
