Field Trip to the San Andreas Fault

9/27/2007 - Field Trip to the San Andreas Fault

Registration is now open for a San Bernardino County Museum field trip led by Senior Curator of Geology Kathleen Springer and Curator of Geology J. Chris Sagebiel. The one-day field trip will explore the San Andreas Fault on Saturday, September 22.

The trip will begin at the museum and travel to the Cajon Pass, through the San Gabriel Mountains, and out into the Mojave Desert to view the San Andreas Fault. Participants will travel all day via van with a stop in Wrightwood for lunch.

"We will discover the geology of Southern California and how the San Andreas Fault Zone has shaped the landscape and ultimately, our lives in this region," says Springer. "In Wrightwood, we will view the most southern extent of rupture on the San Andreas system that occurred in the huge 1857 earthquake and discuss the potential for future events."

The cost of $60 per person ($50 for Museum Association members) includes coffee, juice, muffins, lunch, snack and beverages. Check in time is 7:30am at the museum, and return time will about 5:00pm. Participants are advised to wear sturdy and comfortable shoes for moderate hike.

Space is limited, so pre-paid registration is required by September 10, 2007. Call LaWanda Avery-Brown at (909) 307-2669 ext. 225 for more information or visit www.sbcountymuseum.org for a registration form.

Springer will also present a lecture, "Living on the Edge-California's San Andreas Fault" at the county museum on Saturday, September 15, at 2:00p.m. that will provide valuable background information for trip participants. The lecture is open to public and is free with museum admission.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org or call (909) 307-2669.
