CALIFORNIA CONTENT STANDARDS of FOSSILS
Science standards alone are shown.  Educators can adapt the information to include mathematics and language arts standards.  Fine Arts standards can be met as students construct Plaster of Paris mold forms and paint them authentically.
The Fossil kit is not appropriate for lower grade levels unless students exhibit some curiosity for prehistoric life.

Different animals have different features to allow them to inhabit different kinds of environments
Animals need water and food
Animals may use plants or other animals for food

Organisms reproduce offspring of their own kind that resemble themselves
Sequential stages of life cycles are different for different animals
Many characteristics of an organism are inherited from parents, some influenced by environment
Variation among individuals
Flowers are associated with plant reproduction
Fossils provide evidence about plants & animals; scientists learn about Earth’s past by studying fossils

3.e

Animals have structures for growth, survival, reproduction
Diverse life forms in different environments
Living things cause changes to environment in which they live
When environment changes, some animals die or move to new locations
Some kinds of organisms that once lived on Earth have completely disappeared; some resemble others that are alive today.

Producers and consumers are related in food chains & food webs
Ecosystems can be characterized by living and nonliving components
Animals must be suited to an environment for survival
Many plants depend on animals for pollination, animals depend on plants for survival

Energy entering ecosystems as sunlight is transferred by producers
Matter is transferred over time from one organism to another
Populations of organisms can be categorized by functions they serve in an ecosystem
Different kinds of organisms may have similar role in similar biomes
Number of organisms an ecosystem can support depends on resources available

Biological evolution accounts for the diversity of species developed through gradual processes
Environmental factors are causes of diversity
Lines of evidence from fossils & comparative anatomy provide the bases for the theory of evolution
Can construct a branching diagram to classify living things and expand diagram to include fossil organisms
Extinction of a species occurs when environment changes & adaptation is insufficient
History of life on earth has been disrupted by major catastrophic events
Evidence from geologic layers & radiocarbon dating indicates Earth age
Fossils provide evidence of how life & environmental changes have changed
Explain significant life developments & extinctions on geologic time scale
Animals have levels of organization for structure and function
Bones & muscles work together to provide structural framework for movement
Construct scale models to communicate scientific knowledge
