Diggin’ It! The Science of Breaking Ground

Get your Hands Dirty Virtually with the Staff at the County Museums

The San Bernardino County Museum and Victor Valley Museums are delighted to announce a new event taking place virtually this summer, Diggin’ It! The Science of Breaking Ground. Led by the museum’s Anthropology and Earth Sciences Curators, Diggin’ It! The Science of Breaking Ground focuses on the sciences that literally work in dirt, archaeology and paleontology, to increase science literacy and promote the scientific understanding of how and why they “break” ground. Join the Museums on Facebook or Instagram, San Bernardino County Museum or Victor Valley Museum, on Saturday, July 10 for a fun-filled day underground!

Go ahead, get your hands dirty! Best of all, Diggin’ It! The Science of Breaking Ground, is a no-cost online event. Tune in to watch exclusive educational videos and at-home activities highlighting the fascinating worlds of archaeology and paleontology through hands-on art activities. The museum staff excavated the following partners Mojave National Preserve, Applied Earthworks, Inc., Malki Museum, Orange County Parks and Recreation, and the Department of Anthropology at California State University, San Bernardino, and more to keep participants digging for more information by providing the scientific understanding of how and why scientists “break” ground.

Alongside the virtual partners, tune in Saturday, July 10 at 11 a.m. for a Zoom webinar Out of the Ashes: Digging into the History of the R.J Dunn House with Dr. Donn R. Grenda, President at Statistical Research, Inc. moderated by Tamara Serrao-Leiva, Curator of Anthropology. This webinar will explore the fascinating historical archaeology of artifacts recovered from the ash dumps of the 1912, Robert J. Dunn House in Redlands, California.

Diggin’ It! The Science of Breaking activity bags will be available for pickup at each museum location. The bags include two hands-on activities to spark the imagination and take participants underground into the worlds of archaeology and paleontology. Activity bags can be picked up during these dates and times at a first come first serve basis, while supplies last:
