County
shares corruption probe with law enforcement
At the request of Assistant U.S. Attorney
Edward Moreton, county attorneys are gathering together copies of hundreds of
pages of statements, transcripts and other documents pertaining to interviews
conducted by county investigators and attorneys.
The San Bernardino County Board of
Supervisors this week directed county attorneys to release the information as
soon as next week following a request by federal law enforcement officials.
The documents provide the central factual
allegations that were developed during the course of the county's corruption
probe.
“In sharing this information with the U.S.
Attorney we are cooperating in law enforcement’s efforts to investigate and
prosecute anyone who may have committed crimes against our citizens,” said
Board of Supervisors Chairman Jon D. Mikels.
The Board made good on another important
commitment this week by ordering legal action against Norcal Waste Systems Inc.
and seven former county officials and businessmen who have pleaded guilty to
bribery related to county contracts.
On
Tuesday, the Board will consider litigation against other people and companies
cited in the investigation. The Board ordered that the legal action and the
public release of a report containing the factual allegations that support the
litigation will occur sometime next month.
“We promised our citizens that we would
recover all that is owed to them by those who cheated them, and that’s what
this litigation is intended to do,” Mikels said. “Restoring the public’s trust
in county government is our top priority.”
