Operation Provider Addresses Local Needs
A little more than 23 years ago, Holland Lowe and her husband, Ralph, joined other members of a San Bernardino church to distribute sandwiches to the city’s homeless.

“We wanted to reach out a little more rather than just going to church and going home,” said Lowe, who lives in the San Bernardino Mountain community of Lake Arrowhead.

The Rustic Loaf Rises in Upland
Mike Urane was building a home in Mendocino County one day when rain interrupted his work and prompted him to visit with a local bread baker he’d gotten to know over the years.

Urane, who owns and operates The Rustic Loaf in Upland, had always enjoyed good bread. When he and his wife, Manya, visited farmer’s markets in southern France, they would find perfectly baked breads complete with caramelized crusts and delectably moist and tangy centers.

Flood Control Diverts, Conserves Water
Despite some significant flooding events in the late 1800s and early 1900s including one in 1862 that wiped out the tiny Santa Ana River hamlet of Agua Mansa near present-day Colton, regional flood control wasn’t given a great deal of consideration in San Bernardino County until the Great Flood of March 1938.

That deluge claimed 14 lives, left hundreds homeless, and caused an estimated $12 million in property damage throughout the County.

Traffic Planners Consider Express Lanes
San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG)—the County’s regional transportation agency—is considering whether to utilize Express Lanes for the proposed lane additions on I-10 and I-15 to reduce traffic congestion and generate revenue for road improvements.

Express lanes Lanes are carpool lanes solo drivers can legally use by paying a toll, which fluctuates based on the amount of traffic on a freeway. Carpoolers can still use Express Lanes for free, but unlike most carpool lanes, these Express Lanes will likely require three or more people for free usage.

05/05/1906 Upland residents voted 182 to 19 to incorporate as a city. The vote was official on May 15

05/10/1810 The first Christian religious service was held in the San Bernardino Valley, which was named after St. Bernardine. The area was governed by Spain until 1823 when Mexico gained independence from the European nation.
