City of Yucaipa

As Yucaipa continues to grow in population we have experienced an increase in demand for law enforcement services. In the city law enforcement calls for service in 2005 increased nearly 21% from 2004 to over 42,000. With our unincorporated area calls for service added, deputies from this station handled over 55,000 last year. An analysis of our crime statistics reveals that serious crimes against persons such as rape, robbery, and armed assaults actually decreased last year. Arrest numbers are up and the overall crime clearance rate is nearly 80%. In short, the men and women of the Yucaipa Station continue working diligently to respond to the increased calls for service in the most rapid and efficient manner, while providing professional law enforcement service to the community we serve.

In FY 05/06 we were successful in obtaining a grant from the states Office of Traffic Services (OTS) for an additional officer for the city assigned to directed patrol DUI enforcement. For FY 06/07 we have submitted an application for a grant to the federal government for an additional officer for the city in their Secure Our Schools (SOS) program. If successful the deputy will be deployed as the third School Resource Officer (SRO) for the Yucaipa Calimesa Joint Unified School District (YCJUSD).

Our primary focus continues to be to provide the best possible law enforcement service at the moment it is needed. We also focus on three areas that we believe are priorities; habitual offenders, traffic safety, and juvenile offenders.

Two officers are assigned, on a rotating basis, to the Habitual Offender Program. They work closely with state parole and county probation officers to monitor people that are on parole and probation to insure they remain in compliance with their terms and conditions.

In Yucaipa you are much more likely to be injured or even killed as a result of a traffic collision, than by being victimized in a crime against your person. Therefore, as a matter of public safety we feel that enforcement of traffic laws and public education as it relates safe driving is a major priority. While all of our city patrol cars are equipped with radar speed detection equipment, three deputies are dedicated full time to traffic enforcement. We also conduct frequent safety & sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and campaigns such as “Click-it-or-Ticket” and “Avoid the 25”.

Juvenile crime whether it is on a school campus or in the community is another high priority. We are working very closely with school officials on the issue through a combined approach involving intervention, suppression, and prevention strategies. A Safe Schools Committee consisting of district officials, school site administrators, station staff and SRO's, meet every month to discuss juvenile criminal activity and appropriate responses. We developed and implemented the Adopt-A-Deputy program in our elementary schools last school year. The program focuses on developing positive interactions between officers and the students and teachers they serve, as part of a prevention strategy. We recently submitted an application for a federal grant in the governments Secure Our Schools (SOS) program to fund another SRO for the district.

Augmenting our stations 56 regular employees are more than 100 volunteers in seven separate units. The San Gorgonio, Valley of the Falls, and Oak Glen Search and Rescue Teams, Citizen Patrol, East Valley Mounted Posse, Line Reserves, and Explorers volunteer hundreds of hours annually. These fine people assist our regular employees to provide services at a level that otherwise would be impossible.
