Central Station

Central Station was established in 1890 and is the longest standing patrol division within the Sheriff’s Department.   The base of operation is out of the Headquarters building and provides law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas of the central valley including Waterman Canyon, Arrowhead Farms, Devore and Muscoy.  In addition, Central Patrol is responsible for contract law enforcement in the cities of Grand Terrace and Loma Linda, as well as the San Manuel Indian Reservation and Casino.

As part of the areas served, Central Station personnel are responsible for law enforcement services at both the Glen Helen Motocross Raceway and the Amphitheater in Devore.  The Speedway hosts the National Motocross Championship event each year and brings in over 15,000 fans for the weekend event.  The concert venue in Devore has gone through several sponsors and in late 2008 became known as the San Manuel Amphitheater.  Over the last ten years, this site has hosted nearly 100 different concerts and multi-day festivals such as the Ozzfest featuring Ozzie Ozbourne, the Beach Boys, Rod Stewart, Brooks & Dunn, Snoop Dogg, Toby Keith, the Legends of Motown and, most recently, the Great American Smoke Out.  With an average of over 350,000 fans passing through the gates of the Amphitheater annually, more than 3.5 million concert enthusiasts have visited this outside venue over the last ten years.

Staffing at Central has increased from 39 deputies in 2000 to 56 deputies today.  The majority of the increase for patrol is due to the addition of the San Manuel contract in 2005.  In addition to an increase in county and city patrol staffing, the number of volunteers who provide service through the Reserves, Explorer, Search & Rescue and COP Units has increased nearly 100%.

The San Bernardino Mountain Search and Rescue Unit #214 consists of 29 Volunteers who participate in Urban Rescue.  These individuals train monthly on a variety of lifesaving techniques including rope repelling, litter hoists and emergency medical aid.  One member, Christine Stuehmann, is a canine handler for two certified area wilderness search dogs and one cadaver dog.  The volunteers from this unit respond not only to the searches within Central’s jurisdiction, but participate in mutual aid requests from throughout San Bernardino and other Southern California Counties.

Central Station hosts three separate Citizen On Patrol (C.O.P.) Units who support the county area and the cities of Grand Terrace and Loma Linda.  While each has responsibilities for different areas, the Coordinators have implemented quarterly training to allow consistent instruction and foster a spirit of camaraderie.  These 60 individuals , along with our 17 Explorers, work at a variety of events including DUI Checkpoints, Click It Or Ticket, local parades, health fairs and all Amphitheater events.  All totaled, our Explorers, COP’s and Search and Rescue Units donate thousands of hours each year and remain among the most active Volunteer Units within the Sheriff’s Department.
