The Challenge Cup

The Challenge Cup, "AKA Baker to Vegas Relay" is a 120-mile relay race that is open to Law Enforcement Agency Teams to encourage physical fitness and camaraderie among officers through competition. It is an annual event that has been in existence every spring since 1985. Twenty runners from each team pass the baton from the starting line north of Baker, through the communities of Shoshone and Pahrump, ultimately finishing the race in Las Vegas. Each stage is approximately six miles in length. The race is started in successive flights but generally starts on Saturday afternoon and ends Sunday morning. Respective team members, who follow in vehicles, attend to runners. The course on back roads takes the race though remote areas of desert and crosses three mountain ranges as it winds its way to the finish. Conditions can be harsh; wind is always a factor, but heat, snow and even locust have taken their toll in past races. Fastest teams require 13 hours to complete the course; the slower teams require more than 20 hours.

In the beginning, 19 teams competed, mostly LAPD and LASD stations. Over the last 25 years, this cherished event has grown to include 277 teams from agencies all over the world. Nearly 100 thousand officers/runners have competed in this event since its inception.

San Bernardino Probation first entered the contest in 1997. That first year, we joined with the San Bernardino Marshals to field a joint team in the then new Invitational category. We earned a coveted "Mug" that year by finishing in the top 50% of the field. In 2000, we fielded our "Probation only" team, second only to Los Angeles County. In the ensuing years, Probation teams from Orange, San Diego, Riverside and San Mateo have joined the fray. The San Bernardino Probation Department Team has gone to the Desert for 12 successive years and earned 10 "Mugs".

This past spring, members from the San Bernardino County Probation Department participated in the anticipated Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay. Visit the official website to view results from our local law enforcement partners in the Inland Empire at http://www.bakervegas.com/index.php.

Our Probation team is looking forward to the next Baker to Vegas Relay Race. Our team members will prevail in another effort to add to our esteemed mug collection. Hope to see you there!
