New juror parking part of “Juror Appreciation Week”

Parking headaches for county residents summoned to jury duty in San Bernardino should come to an end Monday (5/8/00) when a parking lot with more than 200 spaces officially opens just south of the Central Courthouse.

Meanwhile, jurors in all San Bernardino County Courthouses will be treated to something special next week as the courts observe “Juror Appreciation Week: A Celebration of Responsible Citizenship. Pens, bookmarks, banners, coffee and doughnuts will greet those who honor their civic responsibility next week in courthouses throughout the county.

“While we set aside only this one week for the official appreciation of all jurors, the appreciation of the time, energy and commitment of jurors to the work at hand is expressed every day,” said Court Executive Officer Tressa S. Kentner.

And San Bernardino jurors will enjoy a little more convenience.

Until now, jurors in San Bernardino have had to compete with county and court employees and customers for parking spaces near the Central Courthouse.

The county secured a lease with CalTrans last month to use the lot for juror parking. The lot used to serve the CalTrans facility on Arrowhead Avenue just south of the courthouse. But it has been vacant since CalTrans moved into its new facility also in downtown San Bernardino.

Jurors can pull into the lot on Second Street just east of Arrowhead any time after 7:30 a.m. and stay until 5:30 p.m. A guard will be on duty to assist with morning traffic.

Court officials hope the additional parking will make jury duty less difficult and perhaps prompt more county residents to show up when summoned.
