Rock Hounding in Barstow

California’s geological forces have created one of the widest varieties of rocks and minerals found in any state. This rock and mineral wealth has long been recognized by rock hounds even before the gold rush days.

Because of the sparse vegetation and varied geological history of the Mojave Desert, Barstow is the center of rock hound activity in the United States. Gem minerals and rocks such as agate, jasper, marble, onyx and small amounts of petrified wood are readily found throughout the desert.
