Ethnography Search Help

Queries of the SBCM databases operate by searching collection records for any string of characters entered in the Search Terms box.  Search terms are not case sensitive.

Search Term entered.  Example: Entering the term basket will return all records that contain the term, basket, in any of the data fields.  Use Search Terms in the Singular form, not plural.  Example: use bead, not beads.

Partial Terms may be entered in the Search Term box.  Example: entering the term pap will return records of Papago objects and records of objects made of paper.

Multiple Terms may be entered in the Search Term box, separated by a space.  Example: entering win yucca will retrieve records containing sewing kit made of yucca fiber and winnowing tray made of yucca. (This is an "AND" search).

To Narrow the Search, view the results of the first search.  Then enter more exact terms in the Search Term box.

To Sort the retrieved data, single-click on a column heading.  To reverse the sort, click again on the column heading.

SEARCHABLE ETHNOGRAPHY DATABASE FIELDS INCLUDE:
Object No. = The museum catalog number for the specific item. Refer to this number if you request further information from the curator.
Synopsis = A description of the object, including Object Name, Cultural Group, Culture Area, and Material. Not all objects have Cultural Group or Culture Area data.
Dimensions = Size of object. Not all objects have been measured.

ADDITIONAL FIELD:
Image = Thumbnail image of object. Not all objects have been photographed. For a higher resolution image, please contact the curator.

NOTE:
The online database only represents a portion of the collections. More data will be made available through frequent updates of this database. The intent of the online catalog at this point in time is simply to demonstrate the breadth of the collections. Researchers should direct queries concerning collections to the curatorial staff for more complete information. Also note that electronic collections data are only proxies for actual objects. Although the database is regularly checked for quality its accuracy is not guaranteed.
