New exhibits highlight wartime experiences

11/1/2016 - New exhibits highlight wartime experiences

Military families offered free admission during the month of November

Exhibits open Nov. 1, 2016

Over Here, Over There: In Times of War and Tuskegee Airmen and the Great Western Migration, 19401970 opens at the San Bernardino County Museum on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The exhibits commemorate Military Family month, which occurs each November. During the month, the San Bernardino County Museum Association is underwriting admission for all active members of the military and their families who will be admitted to the museum for free.

Over Here, Over There: In Times of War explores the shared experiences of war, both on the front lines and on the U. S. home front. Military uniforms and equipment from the American Civil War to the start of the Cold War along with civilian personal effects and letters from the same periods of time help illustrate how times of war affect players, both at home and on the front lines. Museum visitors are invited to share their own and family stories about these times of conflict and community.

Tuskegee Airmen and the Great Western Migration, 19401970 is a traveling exhibit curated by Bergis Jules at the Library Archives, University of California, Riverside. The exhibit focuses on an aspect of the Tuskegee Airmen, a corps of African-American military fighter and bomber pilots who fought in WWII. More than 40 percent of southern-born African-American veterans lived outside the southern states in 1971, and many of them ended up in California, Washington, and Oregon. This migration is one of the most pivotal moments in African-American history.

Civilian and soldier alike have shared in their experience of war, said Jennifer Dickerson, the museums curator of history, each sacrificing something for their country and both giving something to a greater cause, thereby influencing change within their communities and in the nation.

According to museum director, Melissa Russo, participation in our countrys wartime efforts is a defining aspect of this region. We are proud and grateful to partner with our museum association in commemorating Military Family Month and honor the sacrifices of our community members by encouraging our military families to visit the museum in November as our guests.

On Friday, Nov. 4 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. the San Bernardino County Museum Association will host a members only reception to open the exhibits. To join the museum and enjoy free admission to the museum all year long, contact Melissa Sanchez at (909) 798-8625

Over Here, Over There, and Tuskegee Airmen, and the County Museums other exciting events and exhibits reflect the effort by the Board of Supervisors to achieve the Countywide Vision by celebrating arts, culture, and education in the county, creating quality of life for residents and visitors.
