Event date: Saturday, May 2, 2015
Fossil Beds Frenzy, a day all about fossils from Rainbow Basin, will be celebrated at the Victor Valley Museum in Apple Valley on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program activities, offered with the support of the City of Hesperia and the Hesperia Unified School District, are included with paid museum admission.
Quintin Lake, a fossil preparator, will demonstrate how fossils are stabilized and prepared for study and exhibit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fossil-themed activities and crafts especially for kids will happen throughout the day. A new exhibit featuring a cast of a rare fossil peccary skull from Rainbow Basin will be unveiled.
“In the colorful hills north of Barstow, California, rocks millions of years old have yielded an extremely rare skull of a peccary, an ancient pig-like animal,” said Eric Scott, San Bernardino County Museum curator of paleontology. “The skull is the most complete fossil of a peccary ever found from this famous fossil site. “
Scott will speak on “Motherlode of the Miocene: the Barstow Fossil Beds” at 11:00 a.m. and “Of Horses, Pigs and Sabretooths: Rare Finds from Rainbow Basin” at 2:00 p.m.
Fossil Beds Frenzy and the County Museum’s other exciting events and exhibits reflect the effort by the Board of Supervisors to achieve the Countywide Vision by celebrating arts, culture, and education in the county, creating quality of life for residents and visitors. The City of Victorville, the Town of Apple Valley, the City of Hesperia, and the Hesperia School District are among museum’s valued community partners.
