Dog Day at the County Museum

The San Bernardino County Museum’s education division will host “Do Canids have Canines: Dog Day at the Museum” on Saturday, November 9. Activities, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., are included with paid museum admission.

“Dogs fascinate us,” said Jolene Redvale, museum curator of education. “From the wildness of wolves to the dedication of domestic dogs, they really draw us in.”

The event, supported by various community organizations, will introduce visitors to the canine family—wolves, coyotes, hyenas, foxes, and Rover—and will explore the nature of being a canine.

“Dogs are amazingly diverse. Some, like the coyote, have figured out how to take advantage of human activity and habitats. Others, like the gray wolf, have suffered the effects of discrimination against predators for hundreds of years. Yet, they still hang on,” said Redvale.

Visitors will encounter rescued greyhounds from GreySave. Visitors can also witness basic obedience training, and learn the benefits of training, vaccinations, and altering. Staff will offer visitors ideas for selecting the best dog for their family, and how to care for a pet they select. Elliot’s Pet Emporium in San Bernardino will offer a coupon for free bag of dog treats at their store on E Street.

In addition, visitors can create a stuffed calico dog, and make dog figures from clay. Gallery talks on the Canidae family will take place throughout the day. Visitors will also enjoy some good storytime adventures, including those of Biscuit the Puppy and old Coyote. All activities are free with paid museum admission, and are appropriate for visitors of all ages.

“The best part of an event like this is seeing our visitors have fun together,” said Redvale. “At the Museum, there is something for everybody!”

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 am to 5pm. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org. The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. If assistive listening devices or other auxiliary aids are needed in order to participate in museum exhibits or programs, requests should be made through Museum Visitor Services at least three business days prior to your visit.
