Museum guest lecture on rock art
A guest lecture by Jerry Dickey at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands will introduce museum visitors to rock art in the Grand Canyon region. The program, scheduled for Sunday, September 15 at 2 p.m, is included with paid museum admission.
Dickey and fellow researcher Don Christensen began a comprehensive study documenting rock art sites in the Grand Canyon region in 1992 for the Bureau of Land Management, the U. S. Forest Service, and Grand Canyon National Park. His presentation will focus on a distinctive type of Archaic Period rock art known as the Esplanade Style, found within a portion of his study area known as the Arizona Strip.
Dickey is a retired judicial assistant and holds a degree in psychology along with training and education in archaeology. He completed academic fieldwork on prehistoric Archaic sites and a historic Spanish presidio in southern California. “As a child, I spent five years living in Grand Canyon Village,” said Dickey, “which left a deep and lasting appreciation for both the region’s natural beauty and its varied Native American cultures.” For the past 25 years he has documented rock art for the Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon–Parashant National Monument, BLM/Arizona Strip, and the Kaibab National Forest as well as in the eastern Mojave Desert of California. He has written and co-authored numerous articles that have been published in American Indian Rock Art, the Pacific Coast Archaeological Society Quarterly, and the San Diego Museum of Man Rock Art Papers. He is the co-author of the recently published book Rock Art of the Grand Canyon Region, copies of which will be available for purchase in the Museum Store.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 am to 5pm. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free.
