Curator to lead tour at historic site in Chino
San Bernardino County Museum Curator of History Michele Nielsen will lead a special walking tour of the Yorba–Slaughter Adobe in Chino on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. The tour is open to the public without charge. Visitors will learn about the history of the Yorba and Slaughter families, the building of the adobe home, and the artifacts it contains.
“We can discover much about the Slaughter family from the three dimensional artifacts that were a part of their daily lives,” said Nielsen. “Many of these artifacts, from animal husbandry tools like blacksmithing equipment to household goods including their furniture and even clothing items, are intact in the house. And the Yorba–Slaughter Adobe is a fascinating site in itself, with an interesting architectural history. Homes made of earth are actually quite energy efficient, as this ‘vintage’ green home demonstrates.”
The Yorba Slaughter Adobe, a San Bernardino County Museum historic site, is California State Historical Landmark #191 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Constructed by Raimundo Yorba in 1852–53, it is the oldest standing residence in San Bernardino County. The property was purchased by Fenton M. Slaughter in 1868 and became the center of a small settlement called Rincon. A post office was established in 1870 and by 1879 the ranch complex included a general store, a saloon, a blacksmith shop, a dairy, and the Vine Slope winery. The site is at 17127 Pomona Rincon Road in Chino.
The adobe is accessible to persons with disabilities. If assistive listening devices or other auxiliary aids are needed in order to participate in museum exhibits or programs, requests should be made through Museum Visitor Services at least three business days prior to your visit. Visitor Services’ telephone number is 909-307-2669 ext. 229 or (TDD) 909-792-1462.
