15,000 Years of Southern California Climate Change

Matthew Kirby will speak at the San Bernardino Guest Lecture on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m. with a program entitled “15,000 years of Hydrologic Change Recorded in the Lakes of Southern California: A History of Droughts, Floods, and Abrupt Change!” The lecture is open to the public at no charge.

Kirby is a paleoclimatologist—a person that studies past climate. To understand past climate change, he uses lake sediments as natural archives of Earth’s climate. His research focuses specifically on the history of water (droughts, floods, and abrupt change) in Southern California and the reasons for past changes in water availability. He will highlight some of his findings from Southern California spanning the recent to over 15,000 years in the past. He will also explain the basics of paleoclimatology and its value as a scientific endeavor, especially for the over-populated, water-poor region of Southern California.

A native of Binghamton, New York, Matthew Kirby is an associate professor at Cal-State Fullerton in the Department of Geological Sciences. He received his AB from Hamilton College, his MS from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and his PhD from Syracuse University.
