Field trip to Salton Sea wildlife refuges
What’s so important about wildlife refuges? Find out in person when San Bernardino County Museum Director and ornithologist Robert McKernan leads a trip to the Salton Sea on Thursday, November 15. The trip includes a visit the Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge and to the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area, both with tens of thousands of wintering waterfowl.
“During the week before Thanksgiving, the County Museum is emphasizing waterfowl and habitat conservation,” said McKernan. “We will once again be exhibiting the top entries from the Federal Duck Stamp contest as part of our “Flights of Fancy” event, so this year I added a trip to nearby refuges so people could actually see some of the habitat that’s preserved with funding from the sale of Duck Stamps.”
The day will not be strenuous, but does include walking on sand and possibly mud. Advance registration is required; information can be picked up at the museum or by calling the Museum Association at (909) 307-2669 ext. 225. The group will leave the museum in Redlands at 7 a.m. and return in the early evening. The cost of $70 per person ($60 for a Museum Association member) includes morning coffee, lunch and transportation. Advance reservations are required by November 12.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sb countymuseum.org. The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities.
