Join the Great California ShakeOut at the County Museum

Join millions of Californians in participating in the Great California ShakeOut, the largest earthquake drill in history, scheduled for 10:18 a.m. on October 18, 2012. The ShakeOut is organized to inspire Californians to get ready for big earthquakes and practice how to protect ourselves when it happens. Museum admission fees will be waived during the ShakeOut event and activities from 9am to noon.

The epicenter of ShakeOut-related activities will be at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. During this educational and fun-filled event, students will participate in the Drop Cover and Hold On Drill, joining nearly 9 million Californians in the largest earthquake drill in the world. They will also be treated to an Earthquake Preparedness fair, complete with emergency equipment, emergency responders, and earthquake preparedness educational activities.

“Since the first ShakeOut in 2008, the San Bernardino County Museum has consistently been an advocate for earthquake education,” said Kathleen Springer, the museum’s senior curator of geological sciences. “The museum is committed to be southern California’s nexus for earthquake science and earthquake preparedness education, and we look forward to school groups and the general public attending our event.”

The museum’s ShakeOut activities will include remarks by Josie Gonzalez, chair of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, Mark Hartwig, San Bernardino County Fire Chief, and Richard McCarthy, Executive Director of the California Seismic Safety Commission. School groups and visitors can visit the Earthquake Preparedness Fair in the museum courtyard and interact with the museum’s education division to learn the Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety and other earth science related content. Springer will also present a lecture, “The Science behind the ShakeOut,”, describing the geologic underpinning behind the ShakeOut scenario earthquake as well as the damages and resulting losses that will occur when the southern San Andreas Fault unleashes a hypothetical magnitude 7.8 quake.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 am to 5pm. General admission is $8 (adult), $6 (military or senior), $5 (student), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free, and fees will be waived from 9 a.m. to noon on October 18 during the ShakeOut. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org. The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. If assistive listening devices or other auxiliary aids are needed in order to participate in museum exhibits or programs, requests should be made through Museum Visitor Services at least three business days prior to your visit. Visitor Services’ telephone number is 909-307-2669 ext. 229 or (TDD) 909-792-1462.
