Mining History in County Museum Guest Lecture

A guest lecture by Austin Marshall at the San Bernardino County Museum will review the history of mining in the San Bernardino Mountains, with a focus on Mitsubishi Cement Corporation’s Cushenberry Quarry in Lucerne Valley. The lecture, which starts at 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public.

Marshall is the mine superintendent for Mitsubishi Cement Corporation in Lucerne Valley, CA. He has been with Mitsubishi for 7 years, and has extensive experience in the mining industry in California and abroad.

His lecture will provide an overview of mining practices at the Mitsubishi Cement Corporation. “Mitsubishi Cement is a leader in the Los Angeles and Las Vegas markets,” said Marshall. “A look into the type of cements and how raw materials are used in the manufacture of cement will be our main focus as well as a brief introduction to mining in the San Bernardino Mountains from mid 1800s to present. The presentation will also touch on reclamation, wildlife and what we provide to the local communities.”

“Limestone and marble are literally the white gold of our region. They are both highly sought after mineral commodities, crushed to make cement, which is the essential building block for all modern construction,” said Kathleen Springer, the museum’s senior curator of geological sciences. “Regional mining is a focus of an exhibit in our new Hall of Geological Wonders, and we are eager to share with the public that mineral resources are an economic engine of our region and that our underlying unique geology dictates the distribution of these resources.”

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.
