On Sunday, March 7, the education division will host a family fun day, “Birds Around Us,” at the San Bernardino County Museum from 8am to 5pm. Sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, museum admission will be free that day.
Starting at 8am before the museum opens, to 10am, families will be able to participate in bird watching. The basics of watching birds and field identification will be covered. “Birds get up early,” said Curator of Education Jolene Redvale. “We don’t want to miss them. Once you know a few basics about what to look for, your ability to enjoy looking at birds increases ten-fold.” Binoculars will be available for those who don’t have them. This activity is appropriate for visitors ages 6 and up.
From 1 to 5pm, visitors will explore in details the features of birds—feathers, flight, eggs, and habitat—through the lives and antics of birds. There will be games, participation activities, and interactive talks that revolve around these fascinating creatures.
“Exploring the world of birds makes for a fun event, because birds are always easy to find. Visitors often use our exhibits to identify a bird they saw in their own yard or on a walk in the neighborhood,” continued Redvale. The museum has the fifth largest bird egg collection in the world, so visitors will experience birds in ways they have never imagined. They will also be able to get the answer to “why have so many eggs anyway?”
The San BernardinoCountyMuseum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. If assistive listening devices or other auxiliary aids are needed in order to participate in museum exhibits or programs, requests should be made through Museum Visitor Services at least three business days prior to your visit. Visitor Services’ telephone number is 909-307-2669 ext. 229 or (TDD) 909-792-1462.
