Museum to share Hubble Telescope visions

2/13/2010 - Museum to share Hubble Telescope visions

Posters, essays, presentations, and works of art by students from the high desert inspired by Hubble Telescope images will be on exhibit at the San Bernardino County Museum from February 13 through 28. Family activity days associated with the special exhibit are scheduled for Saturday, February 13 and Monday, February 15 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. The museum will be open on Monday, February 15 in recognition of Presidents Day.

Some of the student projects displayed at the county museum will be chosen to be featured at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Space Telescope Science Institute made public four Early Release Observations in preparation for a new decade of phenomenal explorations with the Hubble Space Telescope. The photos inspired students from the Adelanto, Lucerne Valley and Silver Valley school districts to compose representations of their favorite Hubble images: Stephan’s Quintent, Pillar in Carina Nebula, Omega Centauri, and the Butterfly Nebula.

During activity days on February 13 and 15, families will explore evening star maps, make a star clock, and learn how to chart the phases of the moon. Activities will be available both days from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, and are free with paid museum admission.

“When I was first approached to consider exhibiting these art works, I didn’t know what to expect,” said Jolene Redvale, curator of education at the Museum. “It is clear that, as they have for hundreds of thousands of years, objects in the space beyond the earth have inspired another generation of star-gazers.”

Julie Taylor is California’s state liaison for this project. Mrs. Taylor is a retired Adelanto school teacher who now serves as an educational consultant for the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, and for the Silver Valley Unified School District.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays and holiday Mondays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8 (adult), $6 (military or senior), $5 (student) and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.

The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. If assistive listening devices or other auxiliary aids are needed in order to participate in museum exhibits or programs, requests should be made through Museum Visitor Services at least three business days prior to your visit. Visitor Services’ telephone number is 909-307-2669 ext. 229 or (TDD) 909-792-1462.
