On Saturday, August 22, San Bernardino County Museum Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott will lead a field trip to Rancho La Brea and the George C. Page Museum. Registration for this one-day trip is now open.
Located practically in downtown Los Angeles, the world famous Rancho la Brea is renowned for its rich fossil record; over three million beautifully-preserved fossils representing more than six hundred species of animals and plants have been recovered there, in excavations dating back to the beginning of the last century. Yet new excavations are yielding brand new discoveries, and the “tar pits” are standing in the threshold of a new “Golden Age” of discovery.
Scott is a Museum Associate of the George C. Page Museum, and has worked and studied there for three decades; he therefore brings a unique and unparallel insider’s perspective to the site and its fossils. He will lead participants through the museum, into the paleontology laboratory, and through the new excavations in progress.
The trip will leave the museum at 9am and return at about 5pm. The cost is $65 per person ($60 for Museum association members) includes transportation, lunch, snacks, and admission fees. Space is limited and pre-paid reservations are required by August 14. Please call LaWanda Avery-Brown or Melissa Sanchez at (909) 307-2669 ext. 250 for reservation.
Scott will present a lecture, “Rancho La Brea: Old Pits, New Finds,” at the museum on Sunday, August 16 at 2pm that will provide valuable information for trip participants. The presentation is open to public.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. For more information, visit
