The Tree of Life
1/11/2009 - The Tree of Life
On Sunday, January 11, Curator of Geology J. Chris Sagebiel will give a lecture, “The Tree of Life,” at 2pm at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. This presentation is free with museum admission.
“The Tree of Life” will provide an overview of exhibits currently planned for the museum’s Hall of Geological Wonders. “The classification of organisms has changed drastically over our lifetime,” said Sagebiel. “Birds are dinosaurs. People and other mammals are viewed as highly specialized fish. Elephants are more closely related to tiny elephant shrews than to almost any other living thing. What is behind this shift in scientific thinking? What do we do with this information?”
In his lecture, Sagebiel will demonstrate how both our perspectives and knowledge of evolutionary history has changed in recent years. He will explore the tree of life to reveal some surprises that we have uncovered through molecular biology and paleontology, including some amazing new fossil bird and turtle discoveries in Asia.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands.
