Museum Guest lecture “Wildfire in Chaparral”
10/24/2007 - Museum Guest lecture “Wildfire in Chaparral”
On Wednesday, October 24, Dr. Peter Sadler will present a lecture, "Wildfire in Chaparral," at the San Bernardino County Museum at 7:30pm. The lecture is free to public.
Sadler will explain chaparral fires, vegetation patch mosaics, and computer simulation in simple terms. He will run a model on screen during his presentation, and use it to answer two questions, one very practical, and the other mostly for fun: What difference does fire suppression make? What might happen if the Santa Ana winds blew more often?
Peter Sadler is a professor in the Earth Sciences Department at the University of California, Riverside. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Bristol, England, was a research scientist at the Georg-August University on Goettingen from 1973 to 1976, and the Crosby lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006. His research interests include quantitative biostratigraphy, geologic processes, completeness of the stratigraphic record, synorogenic sedimentation, and fire-modulation.
This program is part of a series of guest lectures offered at no charge by the county museum. Upcoming guest lectures scheduled are Elizabeth Cochran on faults in the Mojave (January 23), Mark Allen on archaeological research in the Western Mojave (February 27), Daphne Fairbairn on animal sexual dimorphism (March 26), Devra Weber on Mexicana farm laborers (April 23), Doug Alshuler on animal evolution (May 28), and Robert Gonzales on Living on the Dime (June 25).
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.
