Museum Hall of History, Anthropology to be transformed

8/15/2007 - Museum Hall of History, Anthropology to be transformed

The history and anthropology gallery at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands is undergoing a major transformation. Work on refurbishing the hall and refreshing the permanent exhibits is underway under the supervision of Museum Exhibits Designer, Curator of History Michele Nielsen, and Curator of Anthropology Adella Schroth. The first phase of the project is projected to be completed in November of this year.

We have wonderful objects on exhibit in the galleries, from an authentic stagecoach and covered wagon to beautiful Native American baskets and pottery, said Museum Director Robert McKernan. With budgetary support from the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, we will now able to present these artifacts, and the stories that they tell, in a much more compelling and exciting fashion.

The museum will remain open to the public during the project. Portions of the history and anthropology galleries will be cordoned off during refurbishment, so visitors can enjoy watching the behind the scenes progress. Temporary exhibits that were housed in the exhibit hall, including Five Suns: the art of ancient Mesoamerica have been dismantled, with some artifacts slated to be reinstalled in new exhibit spaces.

This is an exciting time for the museum, said McKernan. We are watching the construction of the new Hall of Geological Wonders, and now were involved in transforming our galleries of cultural prehistory and history.
