Living on the Edge: California's San Andreas Fault
9/15/2007 - Living on the Edge: California's San Andreas Fault
Visitors are invited to the San Bernardino County Museum for a presentation by Senior Curator of Geology Kathleen Springer, "Living on the Edge: California's San Andreas Fault," on Saturday, September 15 at 2:00pm. This presentation is free with museum admission.
"Southern Californians literally live on the edge thanks to the San Andreas fault," said Springer. "Earthquakes occur frequently within the San Andreas system-more than 200 earthquakes greater than 6.0 magnitude are known since 1769. However, the southern section of the main trace of the San Andreas fault has not broken since the huge Fort Tejon quake in 1857. This 'locked' section of the San Andreas, south of Parkfield and north of the Salton Sea, ruptures about every 110 years."
Springer will discuss how California's San Andreas fault keeps us literally "Living on the Edge." This lecture will also provide background information for participants registered for the museum's field trip to the San Andreas Fault from Redlands to Los Angeles County, scheduled for September 22. It will also offer a sneak preview of fault-related exhibits planned for the museum's Hall of Geological Wonders, now under construction.
Kathleen Springer is the Senior Curator of Geology for the San Bernardino County Museum. She has an extensive background in both geology and paleontology and has been with the SBCM for nearly 19 years leading geologic and paleontologic investigations throughout southern California, Arizona, and Nevada.
