Historic Fort Coso
On Wednesday, September 26, archaeologist Russell Kaldenberg will present a guest lecture, "Historic Fort Coso," at the San Bernardino County Museum at 7:30 pm. This lecture is free to public.
Built by 1867 and located in the Coso Mountains on the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake, Fort Coso is thought by many to have been a U.S. Cavalry base and an outlier of Fort Independence. Kaldenberg will review planned research to help determine if that theory is true. He will discuss and show slides of the recent preservation work done at Fort Coso, including cleaning up the fort and shoring up its walls against further decay.
Russell Kaldenberg is the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station base archaeologist. Born in Taft, California, he received a Masters in Anthropology from San Diego State University. He has worked as an archaeologist for the Forest Service in Wisconsin and the BLM in California, most recently as the BLM's California's State Archaeologist.
The San Bernardino County Museum sponsors its guest lecture series to share current research by prominent researchers and scholars with the public. Scheduled for this year's series are Peter Sadler on wildfire in chaparral (October 24), Elizabeth Cochran on faults in the Mojave (January 23), Mark Allen on archaeological research in the Western Mojave (February 27), Daphne Fairbairn on animal sexual dimorphism (March 26), Devra Weber on Mexicana farm laborers (April 23), Doug Alshuler on animal evolution (May 28), and Robert Gonzales on Living on the Dime (June 25).
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Parking is free. For more information, visitwww.sbcountymuseum.org.
