All Aboard at the County Museum
The San Bernardino County Museum education division, history division, and the Museum Youth Club are joining forces to present “All Aboard for Train Day” at the museum on Saturday, January 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Train Day events are free, and children aged 5 to 12 will be admitted to the museum at half price with a paid adult.
“If you love trains, this is the day to be at the museum,” said Nancy Kirkwood, museum educator. “We’ll have everything from model trains to discussions about our very own locomotive and caboose, along with lots of family activities with the Museum Youth Club.”
The Orange County Module Railroaders and the Pacific Coast Modular Club will be at the museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Each will have a 12 foot by 24 foot layout set up and running in the Fisk Gallery, and the model railroad engineers will be available to answer questions and explain their hobby to visitors.
A workshop scheduled for noon will focus on how to identify locomotives. A 2 p.m. workshop will give tips about how to improve the way model trains run. Both workshops are free; pre-registration is not required.
Michele Nielsen, museum curator of education, will exhibit some rarely-seen railroadiana from the museum collections and will answer questions about restoration plans for the museum’s 2825 Southern Pacific steam locomotive and tender and the AT&SF caboose. Railroad buffs will also be present to answer questions about the museum’s rolling stock. The Museum Association will hold a drawing to give away exact models of the museum’s caboose to three lucky winners.
Railroad activities for families and children will be offered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at no charge.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands.
