Museum Trip to Ice Age Lakes
Registration is now open for a San Bernardino County Museum Association field trip to explore Ice Age lakebeds in the Mojave Desert. The one-day trip, led by Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott and Curator of Geology Chris Sagebiel, is scheduled for Saturday, September 17; the deadline for registration is September 9.
“The Ice Ages were periods of prolonged and dynamic environmental shifts. Powerful forces at work tens of thousands of years ago left indelible imprints on our regional landscape,” said Scott. “On the trip, we'll see some of these ancient impacts up close, and discuss what the Mojave was like during the Ice Ages.”
Mr. Scott will give a pre-trip introductory presentation, “Before Global Warming: The Ice Ages in Southern California,” on Sunday, September 11 at 2:00 p.m. This talk is open to the general public and is free with museum admission.
Participants in the field trip will meet at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands at 7:30 a.m. and return in the evening. The tour will generally follow the course of the Mojave River with stops in and around Victorville, Lake Manix, and Lake Mojave, and, depending on time and weather, perhaps as far northward as Lake Tecopa near Shoshone.
The cost of the trip is $50 per person ($40 for members of the San Bernardino County Museum Association), which includes transportation, a light breakfast, lunch, and beverages. Children aged 9 and over are welcomed but must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and pre-paid reservations are required.
“Be prepared for the desert weather with sunscreen, long-sleeves and long pants, sun glasses, a hat, and a windbreaker,” said Scott. “Hiking boots are a good idea, because we’ll be getting out and doing some exploring, not just pointing out the windows.”
Registration forms are available at the museum or on-line at www.sbcountymuseum.org. “Ice Age Lakes of the Mojave Desert” is one of a series of field trips organized by the San Bernardino County Museum Association that offer the opportunity to learn about our region’s cultural and natural history accompanied by a museum curator.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org or call (909) 307-2669 ext. 225 / TDD/TTY: (909) 792-1462.
