Free Admission Sunday at the County Museum

The San Bernardino County Museum invites the public to visit the museum in Redlands during regular museum hours with no admission fee on Sunday, August 7. Visitors will enjoy special exhibits as well as displays of specimens and artifacts that interpret local history, anthropology, geology, paleontology, and biological sciences in regional context. Families can participate in Family Fun Day activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a special presentation on the Colorado River will be offered at 2 p.m.

“We are using this free admission Sunday to kick off a new series of free Sunday programming,” explained Museum Director Robert McKernan. “Part of the reason the county and our sponsors support free admission at the museum is to ensure that residents throughout the county can visit the museum, regardless of their family size or income. Free Sundays are thus a perfect opportunity to present exhibits and programs that emphasize various county districts and remind our patrons that the museum serves all of inland Southern California.”

The county’s first district, encompassing the vast Mojave Desert and portions of the San Bernardino Mountains, will be this free Sunday’s focus. The Family Fun Day, “Hunting Skills: Desert Style” is designed especially for families with children ages 3 to 12. Visitors will learn what Native Americans did to survive in the desert, what animals they hunted, and what other foods they ate. Families will see weapons and tools that Indians used, and can try to hunt down some camouflaged “animals” in the Ethnobotany Garden. Children can make a hunting tool for a materials fee of $2.00.

Robert McKernan will give a free illustrated presentation about plants and animals along the Colorado River at 2:00 p.m. To help visitors become more familiar with the district’s cultural and natural heritage, vintage images from the Museum Archives will be on exhibit.

“Seldom Seen: Curators’ Choices from the Collections,” in the Fisk Gallery, offers samples of unusual objects from the museum’s permanent collections that are rarely exhibited. “First Weapons: The Art of Hunting Game” in the Hall of History galleries is a special exhibit in the Native American Traditions series, sponsored in part by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. “Contemporary Fiber Art” is a display of weaving, embroidery, beading, and other needle arts by members of the Western Textile Center Association, shown in conjunction with the Home of the Brave memorial quilt.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Exploration Station live animal gallery will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Everyone will be admitted free on Sunday, August 7.
