The San Bernardino County Museum will host the 25th annual Wildlife Art Festival on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 16, 17, and 18, 2007 in Redlands, California. Festival hours are Friday 9 am to 9 pm, Saturday 9 am to 5 pm, and Sunday 9 am to 4 pm. Twenty five prominent wildlife artists will exhibit their paintings, sculptures, carvings, and limited edition prints in the museum’s Hall of History and Schuiling Gallery. The festival is organized by the San Bernardino County Museum Association.
The Wildlife Art Festival began when top paintings from the Federal Duck Stamp Competition were first shown on the West Coast in 1983 at the San Bernardino County Museum. From this exhibit of small, exquisitely detailed paintings, the festival has grown and evolved over the years while maintaining its focus on wildlife and conservation. Twenty five years ago, the event was called the “Waterfowl Festival,” art works featuring water birds. As more and more artists sought to enter their works in the festival, a wider range of wildlife paintings was accepted into the event.
Since 1987, a “Featured Artist” has been selected every year to produce a work of art as a signature piece for that year’s event. This year, Lee Kromschroeder from Escondido, California, will present “Running the Spit.” Signed limited edition prints along with the original painting will be highlighted at the festival. This year's winner of 75th Anniversary 2008 Federal Duck Stamp Contest is
Joe Hautman of Plymouth, Minnesota.
For the 25th year anniversary, the festival has invited past featured artists, including Robert Steiner (San Francisco CA, 1987, 1996), Robert Copple (Seal Beach CA, 1990), Lindsey Foggett (Forest Falls CA, 1997), Pam Stoehsler (Klamath Falls OR, 1998), Rock Newcomb (Payson AZ, 2000), Carol Heiman-Greene (Orange CA, 2003), and Gary Johnson (Encinitas CA, 2006).
Other participating artists are Ray Brown, Jr. (Lake Forest CA), Truong Buu Giam (Westminster CA), Pat Gilmore (Vista CA), Joe Hautman (Plymouth MN), Brenda Johnson (Crestline CA), Marty Katon (Venice CA) Leslie Kirchner (Green Valley CA), Robert Nichols (San Diego CA), Julio Sanchez de Alba (El Paso TX), Sally Quenette (Ramona CA), Robert Richert (Los Alamitos CA), Dennis Schroeder (Junction City CA), Rob Sutton (Monrovia CA), Linda Walker (Bemidji MN), Jan Wax and Chris Bing (Philo CA), Stephen West (Torrance CA), and Terry Woodall (North Bend OR).
The festival also includes the top entries from this year’s Federal Duck Stamp Competition in their first West Coast exhibition after the competition. Children’s art is represented by winning entries in the Federal and California Junior Duck Stamp program and by classroom projects in the Tom Bennett Children’s Art and Environmental Science Competition by students in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Educational booths and displays from a variety of conservation and environmental groups are also slated for the festival.
