Cigna Disability & Protected Leave Information

The County of San Bernardino is pleased to announce Cigna Disabilities as a new provider for short term disability insurance, long term disability insurance and protected leaves administration. Providing disability and leave administration for over 40 years, Cigna’s businesses rank among the largest health care and related employee benefits organizations in the United States. Cigna provides the personalized support needed to help employees manage their absences and facilitate a return to work.

1. When does the new program start with Cigna?

On July 28, 2012 Cigna will begin administering the County’s Short Term Disability (STD) and Protected Leave Program.

2. Who do I call to report a protected leave or short-term disability that begins on or after July 28, 2012?

Call Cigna toll free at 1.800.238.5834. You can reach a Cigna representative between the hours of 5:00am and 5:00 pm Pacific time. If you call after hours, leave a voice mail message and a Cigna representative will return your call the next business day.

3. Can I file a claim online?

Yes! You can visit www.myCigna.com to file both disability and protected leave claims. Select ‘Review my coverage’ tab in the menu and click on Disability/Leave of Absence.

4. I filed a short term disability claim with The Hartford before July 28, 2012. What happens with my claim?

The Hartford will continue to manage your disability claim. If you have a new disability that begins on or after July 28, 2012, report the disability to Cigna.

If you are also on a protected leave, Cigna will begin administering the leave effective July 28, 2012.  All of the information pertaining to your leave will be transferred to Cigna.

5. I take my spouse to weekly physical therapy appointments and I have an approved intermittent Family Medical Leave claim with The Hartford. What do I need to do?

All of the information pertaining to your intermittent leave will be transferred to Cigna. If you have an absence to request on or after July 28, 2012, contact Cigna. You also need to report your absence to your supervisor.

6. When should I report an absence to Cigna?

Family Medical Leave – if you have a serious health condition that makes you unable to perform the functions of your job and expect to be absent from work for:

  • More than three consecutive calendar days
  • Intermittent periods of time (non consecutive hours or days away from work) or
  • Hospitalized for any amount of time

Short term disability – contact Cigna if you are expected to be absent from work for 7 or more consecutive days due to your own disability.

OR for one of the following:

  • Birth of a child and care of a newborn child
  • Placement of a child with you for adoption or foster care
  • Care for a spouse, child or parent with a serious health condition
  • Qualifying Exigency reason(s) arising from your family member’s military deployment
  • Care for a family member who incurred a serious injury or illness in the line of active military duty
