Welcome to San Bernardino County Fleet
Management
The Fleet
Management Department provides vehicles, equipment, and services to
the officials and employees of the County so that they may, in turn,
provide services that promote health, safety, well being, and
quality of life to the residents of the County.
Fleet Management provides
services for the majority of county vehicles and equipment.
Services include the acquisition, maintenance, repair,
modification, and disposal of vehicles and other related equipment.
The San Bernardino County Fire, Sheriff, and Special Districts
Departments are authorized to operate their respective fleets
independent of Fleet Management.
Fleet Management
operates its main
garage in San Bernardino — including a light duty (cars and pickup
trucks) shop, heavy duty (large trucks and other equipment) shop,
welding/metal fabrication shop, emergency vehicle make-ready shop,
parts room and a fueling station. The department also operates
five smaller “service centers” in outlying locations and 21
strategically located fueling sites.
Additionally,
the department
operates a motor pool, which has ownership and/or maintenance
responsibility for approximately 1,700 automobiles, vans, pick-up
trucks, and various specialty vehicles assigned to county
departments. The Motor Pool coordinates the collection and
distribution of replacement, fuel, maintenance, repair, and other
operational costs of fleet vehicles.
Improved
customer
satisfaction will ensure a stable/increasing customer base for the
department that will support the lowest possible unit cost
distribution to the county operational departments.
Vehicle availability
is critical to all
county departments in order for them to deliver services to their
clients. It is therefore critical that Fleet Management
complete all vehicle maintenance and repairs as quickly as possible
but without sacrificing quality. Additionally, timely vehicle
maintenance/repairs turnaround will improve overall customer
satisfaction.
An element
of the county’s
mission is to improve the quality of life for its residents.
Improving air quality is one component for improving the overall
quality of life, and reducing vehicle emissions is a critical
element in the effort to improve air quality. Furthermore,
South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD – with
significant jurisdiction in the county) Rule 1191 mandates that,
beginning July 1, 2001, all public fleets with more than 15 vehicles
must purchase low emission vehicles (LEV or better). During
its regular purchasing cycle, Fleet Management intends to continue
replacing the existing fleet with ultra low emission vehicles (ULEV),
including hybrids. It is estimated that the entire fleet will
consist of only ULEV’s by FY2009-10.

Smart
Cars Are Here!
Fleet
Management recently completed the purchase of three Smart cars.
These vehicles are equipped with 3-cylinder engines and 5-speed
automated manual transmissions, seat two people, and are rated
at 41 MPG highway. Fleet
purchased the vehicles to gather data on their efficiency,
durability and usefulness.
Preliminary data shows the Smart car has excellent resale value,
far better than other cars in similar classes. Already they have
been quite popular, as they are fun to drive and quite easy to
park. They seem to draw a crowd wherever they are, too!
These
vehicles are in the San Bernardino rental pool, available to any
department that requests them. While we gather data, we are
restricting the rentals to daily use only. Call 387-7871 to
reserve one, or just come by and take a look! For more
information, you contact the Fleet Services manager at 387-8254.
Fleet Management Achieves ASE Blue Seal Certification
This award is only given to fleet garages (auto shops) that have
over 75% of their technicians ASE Certified.
Employees must pass a series of exams and obtain
certifications in several areas. Congratulations to our employees!
County Vehicles Get
New Look
County vehicles are being re-decaled with
new stripes and logos. Vehicles are easier to identify as County
vehicles.
Awards & Recognition
100 Best Fleets in North America 2009
Competition: Fleet Manage-ment is proud to have placed 5th in last
year's competition - our 4th year in a row we have placed in the top
100.
However, this year when we submitted
our application there was a glitch in their computer system and they did
not receive our application - and although we also sent a PDF copy via
e-mail, they did not forward the e-mail to the review committee,
therefore it was not ranked.
So we will have to wait until
next year to prove to them that we are the best in the nation!
Keep up the good work.
