Advisory Committee

The Desert Sierra Region Advisory Committee helps develop strategies for reaching African Americans with messages about healthy eating and physical activity. Membership includes concerned residents, community leaders, educators, ministers, registered dietitians, nurses, doctors, and advocates.

The Committee has the following objectives:

bullet Identify the best ways to communicate, educate, and motivate healthy eating and physical activity in African American communities.
bullet Develop strategies, provide training, and strengthen the role of groups working to promote the health and wellness of African Americans.

bullet Increase community-wide knowledge of the relationship between diet, regular physical activity, and chronic disease prevention.
bullet Provide guidance in creating ethnically and culturally appropriate campaigns, materials, collaterals, interventions, and evaluation strategies for the African American Campaign.
bullet Advocate for policy, systems, and environmental changes that transform African American communities into areas that support healthy eating, physical activity, and food security.

Principal funding is from the USDA Food Stamp Program through the Network for a Healthy California, which is an initiative of the California Department of Public Health. These institutions are equal opportunity providers and employers.
