Background: In 2003 USDA challenged states to coordinate approaches around nutrition education. Representatives of the State of California USDA funded programs have been meeting regularly since then to develop and implement a State Nutrition Action Plan (SNAP).

The County Nutrition Program has been asked to follow the State’s lead and develop a County Nutrition Action Plan (CNAP). There are several agencies in San Bernardino County that are USDA funded and charged to deliver food and nutrition education to low income families such as: Food Stamps, the WIC Program, Child Nutrition Programs (School Food Service), and the Nutrition Network Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program (FSNE).

The plan is to convene food and nutrition education decision-making leaders to discuss the potential of coordinating efforts to accomplish mutual objectives of service delivery. The outcome will be an action plan and an evaluation of accomplishments. Examples of opportunities for coordination include:
1. Increase participation in the food stamp program, the WIC Program and the school meal program to prevent the risk for hunger.
2. Formulate partnerships to promote increased fruit and vegetable consumption as an approach to obesity prevention.
3. Formulate partnerships to promote the value of breakfast as a mode to improve academic achievement
