RECIPES TELL HISTORY, PARTICULARLY FAMILY HISTORY.
"Soul food" as we know it is a distinct cuisine derived from the edible foods available to enslaved Africans spanning from Africa to the West Indies and the Americas. Still tightly bound to oral tradition, many of these recipes have unfortunately been lost over the years. If this trend continues and these recipes remain unrecorded, many more will sadly be lost.
The Network for a Healthy California—Desert Sierra Region, in collaboration with the Westside Story Newspaper, are asking black residents to share their family recipes and in so doing, share their family history.
Our project is threefold:
1) Showcase our local family recipes
2) Celebrate our culture and rich histories
3) Communicate health tips to our community
Join us in creating a collection of recipes that our friends and family will treasure and cherish for years to come. Together, we will present our community with a legacy of health, a legacy of a family and a legacy of love.
