Senior Nutrition

The senior nutrition program, initiated by the Older Americans' Act, provides nutritious meals and some related services to assist senior citizens to maintain independent living with dignity. Some major goals are to improve the nutritional status and overall well being of senior citizens, to encourage social interaction and reduce isolation through group dining experiences, and to help guide seniors to other available services.

Noontime group meals are served at various locations. At some sites, additional meals may be offered. For those who are homebound, teams of volunteers deliver nutritious, specially formulated frozen meals that can be easily heated in regular or microwave ovens.

To participate, a person must be age 60 or older, or a spouse or disabled person of any age living in the senior citizen's house-hold. While one of the aims of the program is to reach lower income individuals, there is no income requirement. To help affirm that those who participate want this pro-gram to continue, there is a suggested minimum contribution per meal.
The program :
Provides nutritious meals to seniors in a group setting and to homebound seniors.
Encourages social interaction and reduces isolation
Makes needed supportive services available and easily accessible to participants
