Walk to School Day

On October 8, 2003, Monterey
Elementary School joined schools
from around the country to celebrate
the International Walk to School Day
by hosting an educational health
and safety fair to provide information
to parents and students on important
timely topics. The International Walk
to School Day promotes health, safety,
physical activity and concern for the environment.

Walking and biking for school can be an important part of a
healthy lifestyle, yet most California children do not start their
day with these activities. Walking to school provides a convenient opportunity to incorporate physical activity into a child's daily routine; yet fewer than half of California children, ages 9-11, get the recommended one-hour or more physical activity per day according to the CalCHEEPS survey in 1999. Walking to and from school is an ideal way to get some of that activity at no extra cost to the child or family.
Still the problem exists, that
about 25,000 children are injured
as pedestrians by motor vehicles
each year. Therefore, some of the
best ways to increase the safety of a
child's walk to school are to provide
safe, well-maintained walkways
separate from vehicles; teach
children to cross streets at marked
crossings, and provide ample, well-designed, accessible, and when necessary monitored crosswalks; and slow traffic in neighborhoods and near schools. In addition, efforts to create safe and accessible routes for children to walk and bike to school can facilitate safe walking and biking for people of all ages.
