San Bernardino-Riverside Counties
Health Collaborative NetCom III
"Meeting Well" - Nutrition Policy Cover Letter
|

|
The San Bernardino-Riverside Counties Health Collaborative
(SBRCHC) is comprised of seventy community organizations
that have joined together to educate about and advocate for
healthier food choices and increased physical activity for San
Bernardino-Riverside residents. We are in the process of imple-
menting organization-level changes within our own membership.
As a leader in the community, you are invited to join us by
adopting the same organization-wide policy for meetings and
events. Such a policy shows your members/employees that
you are committed to improving their health by
1. Encouraging the addition of water, fruit and vegetable choices
at all meeting and events.
2. Providing time for short physical activity breaks at meetings,
programs and events longer that 90 minutes (see attached
agreement).
Why do this? Potential benefits to your members/employees
include an increase in health, happiness and productivity and a
decrease in absenteeism due to chronic diseases. Over 35%
of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke and
diabetes can be linked to poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle.
Over 72% of the people over 18 in San Bernardino-Riverside eat
fewer than the recommended 5 servings of fruit and vegetables
each day, and over 60% of this same population are at risk for a
sedentary lifestyle by virtue of their getting less than 30 minutes
of exercise at least 5 days a week.
You can make a difference! Commit yourself and your company/
organization to eat more fruit, eat more veggies and get moving
at meetings and events. One of our SBRCHC representatives will
be contacting you soon with more information about how you can
participate in this program. |
