About Us

The County of San Bernardino Solid Waste Management Division (SWMD) is responsible for the operation and management of the County of San Bernardino's solid waste disposal system which consists of six regional landfills, eight transfer stations and two community collection centers. The County contracts with Burrtec Waste Industries for disposal site operations and maintenance.
Also, the Division administers the County's solid waste handling franchise program and the refuse collection permit program which authorizes and regulates trash collection by private haulers in the unincorporated area.

Outreach Programs
Commercial Green Waste Management

Landscape management professionals can reduce waste by grasscycling, not over-watering or over-fertilizing. Good landscape design can reduce green waste and save money. The County or your city has resources to assist the landscape industry in reducing waste. For more information, call 1-800-722-8004 or your city recycling coordinator.

Source Reduction and Recycling

San Bernardino County offers community education programs designed to assist residents with waste reduction, recycling and reuse activities. For information on these programs please call (909) 386-8701.

Speakers Bureau

Waste management--whether it’s recycling, waste prevention, composting or waste system operations--is a sometimes confusing and always a changing business. The County has staff available to speak to your school, civic group, club or organization on any aspect of waste management. Facility tours are also available. To make arrangements, call (909) 386-8975.

Grasscycling

Is the natural recycling of grass by leaving clippings on the lawn when mowing. Grass clippings decompose quickly and release valuable nutrients back into the soil. Grasscycling is simple, easy and it works! Call your local recycling coordinator.

Waste Prevention

The preferred way to reduce waste is to not make it in the first place. Meaning, the less waste you have to start with, the less waste you’ll have to recycle, compost, reuse and so on. Writing on both sides of a sheet of paper, using products that last longer, using voice- or e- mail are all good methods to trim waste. Other waste reducing ideas include using a mulching lawn mower, buying products with minimal packaging, removing your name from mailing lists and replacing incandescent lighting with fluorescent lighting. Other waste prevention tips are available by calling 1-800-722-8004.
