Industry Roundtable for Camps

Handwashing In 2012, the Division of Environmental Health Services (DEHS) launched a series of Industry Roundtables. An Industry Roundtable is an open forum where operators can hear about Division updates, learn more about inspection procedures, and participate in a Q&A session with the DEHS management team. Thus far we have had three Roundtables for food facility operators, one for pool/spa operators, and one for operators of community and non-transient water systems.

We have had numerous requests to hold an Industry Roundtable for camps/housing facilities. We would like to hold the inaugural Camp/Housing Industry Roundtable in the spring of 2014. Please take this short survey to indicate your interest in attending such an event, and to tell us what type of topics you’d be interested in hearing about at the Roundtable.

Hantavirus

Hantavirus The vector-borne disease Hantavirus has been making headlines in the news over the past few months. The outbreak in Yosemite National Park was one of the worst Hantavirus outbreaks in recent memory in the United States. According to the CDC, there have been 10 confirmed cases of Hantavirus as of November 1, 2013 in people that had recently visited Yosemite.

Did you know that rodent control in and around camps and the home is the best way to prevent Hantavirus? Deer mice, cotton rats, rice rats, and white-footed mice are known to carry Hantavirus, so make sure to keep these critters away from your camp or home! New Social Media Sites Launched for DEHS

Social Media The Division of Environmental Health Services is always looking for ways to increase communication and health education outreach to the community, and social media is an important tool in reaching San Bernardino County residents, visitors, and operators. We have launched several new social media sites over the past few months. Our English-language Pinterest site is http://pinterest.com/sbehs and our Spanish-language site is http://pinterest.com/sbehsesp. We will be “pinning” to boards on camp safety, pool safety and drowning prevention, mosquito and vector control, food safety and foodborne illness prevention, and more.

We have also created two YouTube channels. The link for our English-language channel is www.youtube.com/user/sbcdehs and the link for our Spanish-language channel is www.youtube.com/user/sbcdehsesp.

DEHS is now on Instagram. Our username is sbehs. We’ll be posting photos on camp safety, as well as other environmental health topics. Please follow us on Instagram!

Communicable Disease Profiles Webpage

Disease of the Month We recently launched a Communicable Disease Profiles page! Starting in 2013, the Division of Environmental Health Services will be profiling a different communicable disease each month. Our goal is to raise awareness about the prevention of waterborne, foodborne, and vector-borne diseases. Check back each month for more information!
