Preventing Norovirus at Camps

Norovirus Norovirus is the most common pathogen that causes foodborne illness in the United States. According to CDC estimates, over 5.4 million people became sick from Norovirus in 2011. Norovirus is very contagious and can easily be transmitted to foods during preparation. Because there are many people at summer camps, Norovirus can spread very easily among campers and staff. Last summer in San Bernardino County, we had several reports of foodborne illness outbreaks at camps. It is important that camp food handlers always practice proper hand hygiene and not prepare food while they are sick.

Camp Emergency Plans

Emergency Kit All organized camps must have a written, site-specific emergency plan. This plan must include procedures for the following emergency situations: natural disasters, lost campers, fires, transportation emergencies, severe illnesses and injuries, strangers in the camp, aquatic emergencies (as appropriate for the site), and other emergency situations as appropriate for the site. Additionally, the plan must include procedures for evacuation of the camp site, and control of vehicular traffic through the camp. The plan must contain contingencies for communication from persons at the site of an emergency to the emergency medical facilities, to the nearest fire station, and to administrative and health staff of the camp.

The written plan must be approved by the camp director, and all staff should be trained on how to implement the procedures contained in the emergency plan.

New Telephone Number for DEHS

Mobile phone We now have a new toll-free number for DEHS! It is 1-800-442-2283. You can reach all of our offices (Rancho Cucamonga, Hesperia, San Bernardino, and San Bernardino Mosquito & Vector Control) by calling our new number. This single number replaces all previous telephone numbers, which have now been inactivated. If you call an old number, you will only reach a message giving you our new 800 number.
