Supervisor Ovitt Honors Team 3 Fight Academy in Ontario as Small Business of the Month Team 3 Fight Academy has been an active and supportive member of community causes since 2009. It is a full service training facility located at 2502 S. Euclid Ave, Suite C in Ontario. Sergio Machado, owner of Team 3 Fight Academy was honored for his contributions to the community. Machado, an Army veteran, was badly injured in Iraq during a helicopter crash that killed members of his unit. He was assigned to 2-35 INF Recon Scout platoon (Team 3). Upon getting out of the Army, he started a clothing company called Recon Fight Gear to honor those whom he served with and those who still serve. Machado uses his military experience to draw from when instructing and fighting. He strives to honor those who gave their lives in the defense of this great country of ours. Machado says that “Team 3 is a direct reflection of the integrity, honor, loyalty and high esprit de corp that he lived by while he served as an Airborne Ranger.” County Services Spotlight – San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board The San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board has training funds for 50 recently separated veterans through the Desert Green Veterans Grant. Recipients may qualify for On-the-Job Training, where a portion of their wages is reimbursed while they train on the job. Welding and HVAC certification courses are currently being launched. Training programs teach the skills needed for green jobs available with local employers. Green industries include solar panel maintenance and installation, sustainable and recycled products manufacturing, transportation and logistics using alternative fuels and hundreds of other industries according to the grant. Interested veterans may apply through their local San Bernardino One-Stop Employment Resource Center located in Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino or Hesperia. A social security card and DD214 paperwork are required. Fifty of these participants must be veterans separated within the last 48 months. The other fifty participants may have been discharged at any time to qualify. Accepting training paid for by federal grant funding does not affect a veteran’s G.I. Bill. Fun Fact – The Battle of Chino September 26-27, 1846 When war was declared between the United States of America and Mexico in September of 1846 the first battle was fought near Boy’s Republic in Chino Hills¹. The Battle of Chino was a skirmish fought between 50 Californio militia members and 24 Americans. It took place at the Rancho Chino adobe. Benjamin “Don Benito” Wilson, owner of the adobe, led the Americans to defeat and capture. One Californio was killed, two were wounded and three Americans were wounded. Wilson was set to be executed but was freed when the war ended in 1847. There is a California State Historic Landmark located at the site of the battle and adobe where it was fought. San Bernardino County Museums and the state mounted historic landmark #942 in front of the Chino Valley Fire District building located at 4440 Eucalyptus Ave., Chino, CA². Next to that plaque is one dedicated in 1946 to honor the Battle of Chino itself.
