Hagman Honors American Heroes on 9/11
On Sunday, September 11, 2016, America will remember the 15th anniversary of the Islamist Terror Attack on America that claimed
the lives of almost 3,000 innocent Americans, injured over 6,000 others and caused $10 billion in property and infrastructure damage.
Total overall costs of the attack to date are estimated at $3 trillion dollars.

"Special tribute is due the firefighters and police who lost their lives while saving others on that tragic day", said San
Bernardino County Supervisor Curt Hagman. "This was the deadliest day in the history of the United States for fire and police,
with 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. These heroes deserve our remembrance and
respect for their heroic sacrifices on behalf of their fellow Americans".
Four large passenger airliners were hijacked by 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists that morning. Two of the airliners were crashed into
the 110-story twin towers in New York City, causing both skyscrapers to collapse in less than two hours, along with the
collapse of the 47-story 7 World Center tower and significant damage to many other large surrounding structures.
The third airliner was crashed into the Pentagon, leading to a partial collapse of the building's western side. The fourth
plane was heading to Washington D.C., when a heroic uprising by passengers forced it to crash into a field in Pennsylvania,
killing all aboard.
The attacks caused major economic damage to New York and had global economic impacts. Wall Street was closed for a week
civilian airspace was closed through September 13, canceling thousands of flights and causing major disruptions for
travelers and businesses.
On November 18, 2006, construction began on the new One World Trade Center building. It was officially opened on November 3, 2014.
Numerous memorials to the attack have been constructed, including the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City,
the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington County, Virginia, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Celebrate the Birthday of Our National Government
All Americans know that July 4 is Independence Day, the birthday of our nation. However, September 17 is the date that historians and scholars consider the
birthday of our form of government. Constitution Day (or Citizenship Day) is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States
Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is normally observed on September 17, the day in 1787 that delegates to the Constitutional Convention
signed the document in Philadelphia. When Constitution Day falls on a weekend or on another holiday, schools and other institutions observe the holiday on an
adjacent weekday. The law establishing the present holiday was created in 2004. Before this law was enacted, the holiday was known as "Citizenship Day". In
addition to renaming the holiday "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day", the act mandates that all publicly funded educational institutions, and all federal
agencies, provide educational programming on the United States Constitution on that day. Iowa schools first recognized Constitution Day in 1911. In 1917,
the Sons of the American Revolution formed a committee to promote Constitution Day. The committee included members such as Calvin Coolidge, John D. Rockefeller,
and General John Pershing.

Here are a few interesting facts about the Constitution, perhaps the most important government document ever created: John Adams referred to the Constitution
as, “The greatest single effort of national deliberation that the world has ever seen”; George Washington wrote to the Marquis de Lafayette that, “It
(the Constitution) appears to me, then, little short of a miracle”; The Constitution has 4,400 words; it is the oldest and shortest written Constitution
of any major government in the world; some of the original framers and many delegates in the state ratifying conventions were very troubled that the original
Constitution lacked a description of individual rights; and in 1791, Americans added a list of rights to the Constitution - the first ten amendments became
known as The Bill of Rights.
San Bernardino County Launches Disaster Preparedness App
September is National Disaster Preparedness Month. In light of that fact and the recent fire emergencies in the County, residents are encouraged to use
‘Ready SB’ before, during, and after emergencies. The new smartphone app was created through the San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services
(County OES) in partnership with QuickSeries Publishing. Ready SB provides residents with multiple resources that will assist them in preparing for a
disaster. It is now available as a free download from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store and can immediately help residents prepare themselves
for emergencies.

Ready SB has many resources available including: My Plan, Alerts, My Status, Evacmap & Shelters, Need To Know, and Resource List. Ready SB’s features
can work with or without Internet connection. The app was created through a grant administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This is the
first app of its kind within the state of California. Public safety officials urge residents to utilize the Ready SB app to make a family emergency plan
and stay informed during emergencies. “Ready SB makes emergency preparedness easier than ever. With one app, residents can stay informed and know exactly
what to do to stay safe in case of an emergency,” said Michael Antonucci, Emergency Services Manager of County OES.
Residents are reminded to take the necessary steps to protect their families as firefighters continue to battle and monitor ongoing fires. “The San
Bernardino County Fire Department goes above and beyond to protect its residents from emergencies. Now with the Ready SB app, we’re empowering residents
with the information they need to take action and prevent themselves from becoming victims of a disaster,” said Fire Chief Mark Hartwig. For more
information on emergency preparedness, visit sbcfire.org.
National Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 in the United States. People recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino
Americans to the United States and celebrate the group's heritage and culture. Hispanic Heritage Week was established by legislation sponsored by Rep.
Edward R. Roybal and first proclaimed by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968. The commemorative week was expanded by legislation and enacted into law on
August 17, 1988, by President Ronald Reagan to cover a 30-day period.

September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries:
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. These nations all declared their independence in 1821. In addition, Mexico, Chile and
Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16, September 18, and September 21, respectively.
Hispanic Heritage Month also celebrates the long and important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in North America, starting with Christopher Columbus
landing on an island in the Caribbean on the morning of October 12, 1492, and claiming the entire area for Spain. A map of late 18th-century North America shows this presence, from the small outpost
of San Francisco founded in the desolate wilderness of Alta California in 1776, through the Spanish province of Texas with its vaqueros (cowboys), to the
fortress of St. Augustine, Florida — the first continuous European settlement in North America, founded in 1565, forty-two years before the English landed
in Jamestown, Virginia.
Many events will be held throughout the District during the month. The Ontario Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will kick off the month by holding its
Fiestas Patrias celebration on Sunday, September 11, from 11:00 am – 9:00 pm at the Ontario Town Square located at 224 N. Euclid Ave., Ontario. For

Upland Fallen Officer Memorial Unveiling
Please join the Upland Police Department for the unveiling of the Upland Fallen Officer Memorial, honoring Officer Ernest R. Dark. Officer Dark was in
pursuit of a speeding vehicle on September 13, 1940. He was traveling westbound on Foothill Boulevard. He chased the vehicle into the adjacent town of
Claremont at speeds reaching 90 mph. At the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Yale Avenue, his vehicle struck another vehicle making a left turn in front
of him. Officer Dark died four days later from injuries he suffered in the collision. The inquest found that the other motorist's "careless driving"
caused the collision. Officer Dark was entombed at the Pomona Mausoleum in Pomona. Officer Dark was survived by his wife, Walteen, and his two children,
Harold and Maxine.
The unveiling will be on September 17, the anniversary of Officer Dark’s passing. Following the ceremony, enjoy an Open House with food, police displays,
