Supervisor Derry was honored by the Boy Scouts of America, California Inland Empire Council when he was selected to be the Distinguished Citizen of the Year for 2010.
Boy Scouts of America recently celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010 and is one of the largest youth programs in the country. The Inland Empire Council is one of hundreds of Boy Scout Councils and represents communities from the high desert to the mountain regions of San Bernardino County.
Every year each council nominates one individual from the community to receive the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award to recognize those who have exceeded their duty to BSA members. Past recipients of this award include Bob Hope and President Ronald Regan.
Supervisor Derry was presented with the award December 9, 2010 during the Boy Scouts of America Award Ceremony at the National Orange Show Events Center. He was nominated by multiple people for the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award based on his contributions to the organization throughout the year.
In 2010 Supervisor Derry helped get the Boy Scouts logo placed on an American Medical Response Ambulance to commemorate its 100th anniversary, coordinated a camp out for more than 6,000 Boy Scouts in Glen Helen, and helped provide funding to Boy Scout members who could not afford to participate in activities so that everyone could be included.
As a former Boy Scout member himself, Supervisor Derry graciously accepted this award and spent the evening celebrating with guests and local BSA members.
