'State of the County' highlights economic and educational opportunities

The High Desert has a lot going for it, as you may have heard at the Victor Valley Chamber’s recent “State of the County” presentation where San Bernardino County leadership underscored some of the great things going on like economic and educational opportunities, technical training for high-skill, high-demand jobs and innovative approaches to housing and infrastructure needs. Here are a few highlights:
- Virgin Trains USA’s high-speed rail line will connect Victorville to Las Vegas, infusing $46.9 million annually into San Bernardino County, with the creation of jobs, housing, retail, and commercial activity. The daily trains will travel the 180-mile distance between destinations in about 90 minutes, reaching speeds of 150 miles per hour. The company also plans to build a station on 80 acres in Victorville and acquire 225 acres for housing and retail/commercial development near the station in North Victorville.
- The High Desert Training Center is set to open in early 2020 at Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville. Victor Valley College, the High Desert Manufacturers Council, the County, and private employers have worked diligently to bring this to fruition. The center will include Adult Training Lab Spaces and classes will be focused on certificate programs for occupational skills that local employers demand.
- K-12 schools, community colleges, and private employers are working together to ensure students are prepared for the world of work.
- The Sheriff's HOPE Team continues working with homeless people and connect them with services to put their lives back on track.
- The County and City of Victorville are partnering on a homeless housing project at the old Queens Motel off I-15 and Stoddard Wells Road. The project, Desert Haven, should be fully operational in the next few months.
- GenerationGo! is a county program to put every youth in a career pathway and provide work-based learning opportunity – including paid internships. The goal is for youth to be co-enrolled in a non-credit work readiness Community College class to develop needed soft skills and a for-credit work experience class.
